Samsung will hold Galaxy Unpacked on July 22 in London, unveiling the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip 8. All will run the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, Samsung’s most powerful chip to date.
Foldables have moved from novelty to serious product category. Samsung owns this space. Apple hasn’t entered it. Google’s Pixel Fold exists but hasn’t gained traction. Samsung is doubling down with two Z Fold variants and refreshing the Flip line on the same day.
The Ultra Strategy
Adding an Ultra variant to the Z Fold line is Samsung’s bet that foldable phones are mature enough to support premium tiers. The standard Z Fold 8 targets mainstream buyers. The Ultra targets collectors and professionals. More options let Samsung capture more of the market.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is the flagship processor for 2026. It’s what every premium phone is building around. Samsung’s choice to launch both the Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8 on the same processor keeps the product line unified and makes marketing easier.
Foldables Reach Critical Mass
Foldable phones cost two to three times what regular phones cost. Durability has improved. The crease is smaller. Software optimization is better. But they’re still fragile and expensive. Yet demand is strong enough that Samsung can release two Z Fold variants and a Z Flip refresh in the same event.
Foldables are no longer experiments. They’re flagship products that drive margins and brand prestige. London in July matters because it’s when Samsung wants the foldable story to dominate.
