Sandra Bullock has spoken publicly about the illness and death of her longtime partner Bryan Randall, explaining that she began grieving years before he died. Randall’s name became a major United States search trend on August 21 after Bullock discussed the experience on the SmartLess podcast.

The Daily Beast reported that Bullock said Randall asked her not to disclose his diagnosis. She described his illness as traumatic and said that he had been affected for much of their eight-year relationship. Randall, a photographer, died in August 2023 at the age of 57 after living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as ALS.
Geo News also reported the podcast discussion and highlighted Bullock’s account of caring for Randall while raising their children. The report said the family kept the diagnosis private in accordance with Randall’s wishes, which is why the public learned little about the progression of his illness before his death.
Bullock said the experience was isolating, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, when she was managing family responsibilities while watching Randall’s health decline. She also discussed how the children experienced him as a father figure and how the illness affected the whole household.
The interview is not a new medical disclosure about Randall’s treatment. It is Bullock’s retrospective account of caregiving, privacy and grief after his death. Her comments have prompted renewed attention because she had largely avoided discussing the diagnosis publicly, while the family had consistently respected Randall’s decision to keep his health information private.
