Semiconductor Selloff Deepens Across Asia as Market Questions AI Boom Staying Power

By Sadia Afrin JoyaJuly 28, 20262 Mins Read

The semiconductor sector experienced a rout on July 27-28 as market confidence in sustained AI spending began to crack. SK Hynix fell 13% and Samsung dropped 10% in a single session, dragging down South Korea’s Kospi index by 9%.

TSMC price hikes AI chip manufacturing

The selloff isn’t isolated. Chipmakers from Taiwan to the US are under pressure as institutional investors reassess valuations baked into the assumption of endless AI spending growth.

The Asian Impact

South Korea’s chip sector absorbed the heaviest blows. SK Hynix, which supplies memory chips to data center operators, saw its stock crater as clients signaled they might slow purchasing. Samsung, which competes across memory and foundry services, mirrored the decline.

Japan’s chip-equipment suppliers also felt the pressure, as investors worried that AI-driven capacity additions would slow if cloud spending moderates.

The Fundamental Question

The semiconductor sector’s 2026 rally rested on a simple premise: AI adoption will accelerate indefinitely, requiring exponential growth in chip production. Nvidia’s $750B deal announcement and TSMC’s record numbers seemed to confirm this.

But market reality is reasserting itself. Investors are asking: What happens if AI adoption plateaus? What happens if companies build AI capability but don’t generate ROI? Who’s holding the excess chip inventory?

Forward-Looking Risk

Chip prices have already begun reflecting oversupply in memory segments. If data center operators continue to overspend on infrastructure relative to actual AI workload demand, we could see inventory buildup and price compression later in 2026.

The semiconductor sector is cyclical. Booms are followed by busts. Right now, markets are pricing in a potential inflection point where AI-driven spending may not be sufficient to sustain the current capital intensity.
