World Cup Final Referee Slavko Vincic Retires After Spain-Argentina Clash

By Aminul Islam NadimJuly 28, 20262 Mins Read

Slavko Vincic has retired from refereeing days after taking charge of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final between Spain and Argentina at MetLife Stadium on July 19. The Slovenian FA confirmed the news in an official statement, closing out a career that ended at football’s biggest stage.

The 46-year-old from Maribor became the first Slovenian to referee a World Cup final, overseeing Spain’s extra-time victory over Argentina. He walked away with the sport’s top individual honors even as the match itself drew criticism for how he handled it.

A Career-Capping Match, and the Controversy Around It

Vincic sent off Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez in stoppage time, a decision that became the lasting image of the final. Argentina’s physical approach throughout the match drew heavy scrutiny of his officiating, with critics arguing he let the game get too rough before finally stepping in.

Despite that criticism, the recognition kept coming. The International Federation of Football History and Statistics named him the best referee of the 2026 World Cup. Italy’s Referee Association awarded him the Giulio Campanati Award, one of officiating’s most prestigious honors.

Why Retire Now

Refereeing a World Cup final is the ceiling of the profession. There’s nowhere higher to go. For many top officials, that’s exactly the moment to step away—leave at the peak rather than fade through lesser fixtures afterward.

Vincic’s retirement follows that pattern. Rather than continuing through domestic leagues or lower-profile international fixtures, he closes his career on the exact night football fans will remember him for, controversy included.

His Path to the Final

The final was Vincic’s fourth assignment at the tournament. He had already officiated the group-stage match between Brazil and Morocco, the Jordan-Algeria fixture, and the Round of 32 clash between Mexico and Ecuador—a workload that reflected FIFA’s confidence in him well before the final whistle blew on his career.

Vincic leaves the game the way few officials get to: with the biggest match of his life as the last one he’ll ever referee.
