Spain face Austria in the World Cup 2026 Round of 32 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Los Angeles, on Thursday, July 2, at 1 pm PT (4 pm ET) — the defending Euro champions against an Austria side that scraped through Group J, and the contrast between the two teams could not be much sharper.

Spain swept Group H with seven points, five goals scored, and not one conceded. Austria went through as group runners-up having scored six goals and shipped six. One team controls its matches; the other tends to live in them.
Spain’s Group Stage and Key Players
Spain’s most dangerous player coming into this knockout match is Lamine Yamal, who has been the best young player in the tournament and arguably the most dangerous winger on either side of the bracket. Mikel Oyarzabal leads Spain’s scoring with two goals. Álex Baena has also been on the scoresheet. The back line has yet to concede, which after three group games in a 48-team World Cup field is as convincing a defensive run as you can have at this stage.
Luis de la Fuente’s side have been methodical rather than spectacular — they do not need to be spectacular when they can suffocate teams through possession and transition. The concern, if there is one, is whether a deep, defensive Austria can stay compact enough to force penalties.
Austria’s Route and What They Bring
Marko Arnautović has two goals for Austria and continues to be the focal point of their attack even at 37. Marcel Sabitzer and Romano Schmid provide the engine in midfield. Saša Kalajdžić adds a physical dimension up front. Austria’s problem is their defensive record — six goals conceded is the highest of any team that advanced, and Spain’s forwards will find space if Austria try to push men forward.
Austria have shown they can score. Their six goals against tougher Group J opposition means they are not a team Spain can simply defend against. If Spain’s midfield gets pressed and disrupted early, there is a scenario where this goes deep into the second half.
The SoFi Stadium Setting
SoFi Stadium in Inglewood is the NFL home of the Rams and Chargers, and one of the largest venues in the 2026 World Cup at just over 70,000 capacity. Los Angeles has a significant Spanish-speaking soccer audience. This will not be a neutral crowd — the crowd skews toward Spain in a way that matters for tournament atmosphere.
Spain’s defensive record and Lamine Yamal’s quality make them the clear favorites — but Austria have the goals to threaten if Spain give them space. Kickoff is Thursday July 2 at 1 pm PT.
