Switzerland take on Algeria at BC Place in Vancouver late on Thursday evening, with the match kicking off at 11 p.m. ET on July 2. It is a World Cup Round of 32 tie with an unusual storyline at its centre: the Algeria head coach, Vladimir Petković, spent seven years managing Switzerland before taking his current job. He knows this Swiss team better than most opponents ever will.

Whether that inside knowledge translates into a tactical edge will be the defining question of the night in Vancouver.
Switzerland’s Dominant Group Stage
Switzerland arrive as Group B winners. They were unbeaten through three games, scoring seven goals and conceding three. A 4-1 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina and a 2-1 victory over co-hosts Canada showed the kind of quality that makes them a genuine threat in the knockout rounds.
Swiss youngster Johan Manzambi has been the tournament’s breakout name, scoring three goals with an assist across the group stage and already drawing comparisons with previous Swiss attacking talents. Captain Granit Xhaka controls tempo, makes key interceptions, and drives the team forward when the moment calls for it.
Algeria’s Route Through
Algeria qualified as the sixth-best third-placed team, which tells you something about how tight their group was. They were beaten 3-0 by Argentina, recovered to beat Jordan, then drew 3-3 with Austria in a chaotic final group game that squeezed them through. It was dramatic, and slightly fortunate.
With Riyad Mahrez, 35, still capable of changing a match with a single moment of quality, Algeria carry a threat that Switzerland cannot ignore. Mahrez at his best is a problem for any defence. There is also a goalkeeping uncertainty to resolve: Petković rotated between Luca Zidane and Oussama Benbot during the group stage without settling on a clear first choice.
The Petković Factor
When Petković managed Switzerland at the 2022 World Cup, he built a side that absorbed pressure well and counter-attacked with pace. He knows the Swiss play the same way under their current setup. He will look to set a tactical trap using that knowledge, and Switzerland will be fully aware of it.
That mutual awareness may produce a cautious game at the start, with both sides looking for a mistake rather than taking risks. The match is live on ITV in the UK and Fox Sports in the United States.
The winner meets Spain or Austria in the round of 16.
