Tesla released its 2026.26 Summer Software Update over the weekend, expanding Grok AI‘s capabilities to control vehicle hardware directly for the first time. The update allows Grok to place phone calls, play music, adjust climate settings, open the glovebox, and answer questions about the vehicle through voice commands.

The expansion marks a critical shift in how Tesla is positioning its AI assistant. Previously, Grok could provide information and answer questions. Now the system can execute actions on the vehicle, crossing a threshold Tesla had explicitly avoided earlier in 2026.
Grok Now Touches Vehicle Hardware
The Summer 2026 update enables Grok to control the climate system, entertainment interface, and glovebox. Tesla did not explicitly cross this line in earlier versions, according to the company’s own prior statements. The move reflects growing confidence in the AI system’s reliability and Tesla’s shift toward more autonomous vehicle systems.
Voice commands now allow drivers to instruct Grok to place a phone call through the vehicle’s communications system, search and play music directly to the sound system, or adjust temperature and ventilation settings without manual input. The glovebox control suggests Grok can now operate physical actuators, not just digital interfaces.
Navigation Engine Learns Routes
Tesla’s navigation system in the 2026.26 update now learns and remembers the routes users typically take to frequently visited destinations. The system prioritizes routes the user has personally taken before when planning a drive, reducing unexpected turns and improving navigation accuracy for daily commutes.
This personalization feature represents machine learning on the vehicle level, where the car adapts to individual driving patterns without cloud uploads or manual training.
AI Integration Across Vehicle Systems
The update expands Grok’s reach across multiple vehicle systems simultaneously. Previously, voice assistant functionality was limited to infotainment queries. The 2026.26 release pushes AI integration into climate, security, and entertainment subsystems, positioning Grok as a central control interface for the entire vehicle.
Elon Musk has emphasized that autonomous vehicle systems require deep integration of AI across all vehicle subsystems. The Summer 2026 update demonstrates Tesla’s progress toward that vision.
Tesla’s willingness to let Grok control vehicle hardware signals the company’s confidence in its AI system and marks a step toward more autonomous vehicle operation.
