Tesla officially launched the Model Y Long Wheelbase on July 2, introducing a six-seat electric SUV with a 325-mile range and a $61,990 starting price. The Model Y L is produced at Giga Texas and comes with one year of Full Self-Driving (Supervised), complimentary Supercharging, and premium connectivity included.
The wheelbase is 15 centimeters longer than the standard Model Y, stretching overall length to 4.98 meters. The extra space accommodates a third row of seating, making the vehicle a genuine family SUV rather than a car with cramped rear seats.
Tesla’s SUV Strategy
The Model Y is Tesla’s volume vehicle—the one that generates most of the company’s revenue. The Model Y L targets families that want an SUV but were hesitant about three-row space compromises. It’s a focused market expansion: take an existing platform, stretch it, add capacity, keep price affordable.
The Model Y L competes directly with gas-powered family SUVs from Ford, Chevrolet, and Kia, not just Tesla’s own Model X. Tesla is betting that consumers will choose electric even if it means buying a new EV SUV instead of adding a gas-powered third row to their garage.
What’s Coming Next
Tesla announced plans to reveal the electric roadster in August 2026. The company is in expansion mode—adding variants, opening new factories, expanding into new segments. The Model Y L is the near-term growth bet. The roadster is the longer-term statement.
