Tesla began taking orders on July 11 for the Model Y L, a new variant that extends the Model Y platform by about seven inches, adding a third row of seating and accommodating six passengers total.

The Model Y L starts at $61,990 and includes a year of Full Self-Driving and Supercharging, along with an EPA-estimated 325-mile range. Deliveries are scheduled to begin between September and October 2026.
Why Stretch the Model Y?
Tesla already dominates mid-size SUV sales. Rather than develop an entirely new vehicle, it’s leveraging the proven Y platform to capture customers who want a third row. Efficiency. Margin protection.
The longer wheelbase should improve ride quality and interior space. More room means more appeal to families. Tesla is going after the suburban SUV buyer.
Production Location
The Model Y L will be built at Giga Texas, leveraging capacity that might otherwise sit idle. Tesla can tool the line for the longer platform without major retooling costs.
Market Context
Global EV sales are scaling faster than some predicted, but the market is also becoming more competitive. BYD surpassed Tesla as the world’s largest EV maker by sales in early 2026. Tesla is responding with variants and new geographies rather than revolutionary new models.
The Model Y L is pragmatic. It costs less to develop than a new vehicle and addresses real customer demand for space.
