Tesla Q2 2026: Record Revenue, Profit Miss, Stock Tumbles 12%

By Rithe RoseJuly 26, 20262 Mins Read

Tesla reported record Q2 2026 revenue of $28.2 billion on July 22, but net income fell short of expectations. The company posted earnings per share of $0.33 versus an expected $0.44. Operating profit dropped 57 percent.

Regulatory credits collapsed. Capital expenditures soared. Free cash flow turned negative. The market punished Tesla stock, which fell 12 percent, wiping out $140 billion in market value. Year-to-date, Tesla is down 17 percent while the Nasdaq is up.

Revenue Growth Masks Profitability Decline

Tesla produced 450,000 vehicles and delivered 480,000 in Q2 2026. Those numbers are strong. The company deployed 13.5 gigawatt-hours of energy storage, a bright spot in a difficult quarter.

But revenue growth without profit growth is a red flag. Tesla’s operating margin compressed as production costs stayed high and pricing power weakened. The company is selling more cars at lower margins.

Capital Spending Surged 142 Percent

Tesla’s capex jumped to $5.79 billion from $2.39 billion in the same quarter last year. The company is building new factories and retooling existing ones. Elon Musk is betting on higher volumes in 2027.

But the capital intensity is unsustainable if profit margins keep shrinking. Tesla needs volume growth to 800,000 units annually just to justify current capex levels. Management has not committed to that target.

The Competition Arrives

Traditional automakers are scaling EV production. Chinese makers like BYD are outselling Tesla in unit volume. Legacy OEMs have more cash and manufacturing expertise. Tesla’s first-mover advantage is eroding.

Tesla’s Q3 and Q4 guidance will be critical. If management projects continued margin compression, the stock could face further pressure. Investors are no longer content with growth alone.

Tesla’s record revenue hides a company struggling to convert scale into profit.
