TSMC Raises Spending, Prices as AI Chip Boom Collides With Rising Costs

By Tarek HasanJuly 28, 20262 Mins Read

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing delivered record second-quarter results on July 16: $40.2 billion in revenue, up 36% year-over-year. Net income surged 77.4% to a record $22.37 billion, driven entirely by demand for AI chips.

Then the company did something that spooked investors: it hiked its full-year capital spending and told clients to expect chipmaking prices to rise as much as 10% starting in 2027.

The Record, and the Catch

TSMC’s Q2 numbers were stunning. The company is printing money because every cloud provider, tech giant, and AI startup needs chips, and TSMC makes most of the advanced ones.

But rising costs are eating into the long-term picture. Manufacturing advanced chips requires cutting-edge equipment, energy-intensive cooling systems, and specialized materials. TSMC’s costs are climbing faster than industry averages, forcing the company to pass increases along to customers.

The $100 Billion US Expansion

TSMC announced plans for another $100 billion in US manufacturing investment, bringing its total US commitments to $265 billion. The company is building capacity in Arizona to serve US-based customers and satisfy government demands for onshore chip production.

This is capital-intensive, long-duration spending. TSMC won’t see returns on Arizona plants for three to four years. In the meantime, the company is signaling that it needs customers to pay more to fund the expansion.

What Price Hikes Mean

A 10% price increase might sound modest, but it compounds across billions of units. Higher chip costs ripple through the AI supply chain: cloud providers pay more, which could slow AI adoption. Startups building on-chip AI hit margin pressure.

TSMC’s bet is that AI adoption will accelerate enough to justify higher prices. If demand stalls, the company faces excess capacity and margin compression.

TSMC is essentially asking the market to fund its massive capacity expansion. The question is whether demand growth justifies the bet.
