US Open 2026 Round 1: Aberg Leads at Shinnecock After Fog Delay

By Alamgir HossainJune 19, 20262 Mins Read

Ludvig Aberg sits atop the leaderboard at the 2026 US Open after Round 1 at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York, posting 2-under par on Thursday. Sam Burns, who had held a share of the lead, dropped to 1-under after a bogey on the 16th hole. Scottie Scheffler, the world’s top-ranked player, finished the round at even par.

Play was suspended just 30 minutes after the first tee times due to heavy fog rolling in off the Atlantic, leaving many groups mid-round on the course. A two-hour delay pushed schedules back across the field before conditions improved and play resumed at 9:05 a.m. ET. The fog was followed by strong wind, which made scoring difficult at a course already set up to resist low numbers.

Rory McIlroy picked up back-to-back birdies on holes 11 and 12 during the round and briefly held a share of the lead at 2-under before settling back as conditions tightened. McIlroy is seeking the career grand slam, as is Scheffler, who has won every other major and needs only a US Open title to complete the set. Scheffler’s even-par round leaves him two shots off the early lead.

Shinnecock Hills is hosting the US Open for the first time in eight years. The course played firm and fast in the afternoon session, with scoring averages rising as the wind picked up. The USGA has prepared a setup consistent with previous difficult editions of the event at this venue, where par has historically been a strong score.

Aberg, the 26-year-old Swede, has been in strong form through the early part of the 2026 season. His 2-under round included a distance birdie putt on the 15th green that gave him sole possession of the lead late in the day. Round 2 begins Friday morning, with tee times starting early to account for possible weather disruption again.

Full Round 1 scores and updated tee times are listed at the US Open preview published earlier this week. The tournament runs through Sunday, June 22. Live coverage alongside other major sports this weekend is available across broadcast partners. The official leaderboard is updated in real time at usopen.com.
