USA vs Belgium in the World Cup round of 16 kicks off at 8pm Eastern on Monday, July 6, at Seattle Stadium, live on FOX.

It is the first World Cup meeting between the two since the round of 16 at Brazil 2014. The United States have not beaten Belgium in their last six meetings, a winless run stretching back almost a century.

Balogun is back for the United States

Folarin Balogun is available after FIFA suspended the red card he picked up against Bosnia and Herzegovina. That matters. He has scored three goals in four games and has set the tone for the attack Mauricio Pochettino wants.

The US topped Group D, then beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in the round of 32. That was the team’s first World Cup knockout win since 2002, the last time it reached the quarterfinals.

Christian Pulisic remains the heartbeat of the attack, though he is still looking for his first goal of this World Cup.

Belgium arrive off one of the tournament’s wildest comebacks

Belgium topped Group G ahead of Egypt, Iran and New Zealand. Then came the round of 32, where they trailed Senegal 2-0 with seven minutes left and won 3-2 after extra time.

Captain Youri Tielemans scored twice in that recovery, and substitute Romelu Lukaku added the other. Lukaku, 33 and Belgium’s most decorated forward with 92 international goals, has scored in his last two matches.

Kevin De Bruyne, now 34 and playing for Napoli, still runs the team with 123 caps behind him.

What Monday night means for both sides

For the US, this is the chance to match the 2002 team and reach a quarterfinal at a home World Cup. The memory of 2014, when Belgium ended the American run in extra time, adds an edge.

For Belgium, the comeback against Senegal papered over a slow start to that match. Another slow start against a home crowd in Seattle would be a harder hole to climb out of.

Kickoff is 8pm Eastern on Monday, and the winner gets a quarterfinal at this home-soil World Cup.
