The United States host Bosnia and Herzegovina at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara on Wednesday, July 1, with an 8 p.m. ET kickoff and a round of 16 place on the line. It is the home side’s biggest game of the tournament so far, in front of what expects to be a packed, partisan crowd in the Bay Area.

USA coach Mauricio Pochettino has his team in good shape. They topped Group D, winning their first two games convincingly before a narrow 3-2 loss to Turkey in the final matchday. The team showed real attacking intent throughout, and Folarin Balogun, who scored twice against Paraguay, has been one of the tournament’s standout forwards.
Bosnia’s Historic Run
Bosnia and Herzegovina made history just by reaching the Round of 32. They drew with Canada in their opener, lost heavily to Switzerland, then came from behind to beat Qatar 3-1 to seal a place in the knockouts on four points. It was an emotional qualification for a side making their debut at this stage of a World Cup.
Coach Sergej Barbarez sets up a team that is difficult to break down and dangerous when they get the ball forward quickly. But making the last 32 may already be the high point of this campaign, given the quality standing across from them.
Pulisic and the American Threat
Christian Pulisic returned from a calf injury and will be key to how the United States create in the final third. Balogun leads the line, but it is the combination play with Pulisic and midfield runners that has made this team hard to press. The Opta supercomputer gives the US a 67.5% win probability.
The atmosphere at Levi’s Stadium should help. The US have built enormous home support through the tournament, and that energy has translated into results on the pitch. Bosnia have shown they can fight but have not yet faced a team of this quality in this condition.
Route Onward
The winner meets the victor of the Iran versus South Korea match in the round of 16. Both of those teams are capable sides, which makes reaching that stage valuable as well as challenging. For the US, this is about more than one game.
The match is available on Fox Sports in the United States and on ITV in the UK.
If the USA win tonight, they face a round of 16 game that will test whether this team can go all the way.
