Africa Women Cup of Nations Kicks Off July 26 in Morocco

By Sadia Afrin JoyaJuly 26, 20262 Mins Read

The CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations opened on Sunday, July 26, 2026, in Morocco with 16 teams competing for the continental title and qualification to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil. Algeria faced Senegal in the first match at 18:00 local time at Rabat Olympic Stadium, with hosts Morocco meeting Kenya later that evening.

Morocco hosts the tournament for the third consecutive time, marking the first country to achieve this feat. The tournament runs through August 16, featuring 34 matches across four groups. The winner claims a record $2 million prize and automatic qualification to the Women’s World Cup.

Three-Time Hosts Anchor a Record Tournament

Expanding to 16 teams makes this WAFCON’s biggest edition yet. The competition spreads across venues in Marrakech, Rabat, and Casablanca, with opening-day matches drawing strong early crowds. Morocco, a perennial powerhouse, begins as co-favorite alongside Nigeria and Cameroon.

The format divides teams into four groups, with the top two advancing to quarter-finals. Every match matters early—one stumble creates a path for surprise challengers.

Star Players And Emerging Talent On Display

The tournament showcases Africa’s best female footballers. Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala, Tanzania’s Mujinga Kambundji, and South Africa’s goalkeeper Andile Dlamini are among the headliners. Younger squads like Kenya and Mali will test themselves against elite defenses.

The Moroccan crowd adds edge. Home support has historically boosted tournament hosts, and Morocco’s attacking intent suggests they intend to capitalize on that advantage.

The tournament delivers four weeks of meaningful football with World Cup berths on the line and continental pride at stake.

FYI (keeping you in the loop)

Why does WAFCON matter more now?

Direct World Cup qualification changed the stakes. Previously, only finalists qualified. Now, any team that wins their group advances to the World Cup. It opens the door for underdogs and punishes favored teams that underestimate early opponents.
