Alphabet’s robotaxi division Waymo announced it will begin fully autonomous rides in four new US cities: San Diego, Las Vegas, Tampa, and Denver. While the service will initially launch for Alphabet employees, public rollout will follow. This expansion caps Waymo’s most aggressive geographic scaling in its history.

The Fleet Expands
Waymo now operates roughly 3,500 robotaxis across more than 10 cities and has surpassed 20 million autonomous rides. The division provides around 500,000 paid rides per week across existing markets. The four-city expansion adds critical mass to what was once a niche offering.
Waymo also confirmed it has begun driving the Hyundai Ioniq 5 autonomously with a specialist present as a validation phase ahead of fully driverless operations. Moving beyond its custom fleet to mass-market vehicles signals increasing confidence in the technology’s readiness.
International Push
Waymo plans to begin service in London, its first international market, later this year. The company aims to hit 1 million weekly trips by year-end. These targets reflect a company operating at the edge of its scaling capacity, shipping robotaxis faster than the public can digest what autonomous transportation actually means.
Waymo’s four-city expansion marks a tipping point where autonomous vehicles stop being a Silicon Valley curiosity and start becoming a transportation infrastructure competitor.
