Wyndham Clark is playing a different tournament than everyone else at Shinnecock Hills. After a second-round 69 on Friday, Clark reached 7-under par and holds a four-shot lead over the rest of the field heading into the weekend of the 2026 US Open.
The 36-hole total is a new scoring record at Shinnecock Hills, a course that has historically been one of the most demanding in major championship golf. Clark’s back-to-back rounds of controlled, mistake-free golf have set him apart from a packed leaderboard of familiar names.
Matt Fitzpatrick, Dustin Johnson, and Corey Conners sit in a tie for second at 3-under, each five strokes off Clark’s pace. The gap is significant, but Shinnecock Hills weekend conditions have a way of scrambling leaderboards fast.
Rory McIlroy, the reigning Masters champion in both 2025 and 2026, is five back at 2-under and sits T-9. McIlroy has been among the best ball-strikers this week but his putter has cost him early ground. Tommy Fleetwood is also at 1-under and in the mix heading into Saturday.
Clark won the 2023 US Open at Los Angeles Country Club and would become only the second man in the last decade to win multiple US Open titles if he holds on this weekend. His driving distance and aggressive iron play have been the story of the first two days.
Third round tee times are set for Saturday, with the final round on Sunday. NBC and Peacock have live coverage throughout the weekend.
