DMK and AIADMK Skip Vijay’s Tamil Nadu Delimitation Meeting

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay chaired an all-party meeting of the state’s Members of Parliament in New Delhi on August 8 to discuss the proposed delimitation of parliamentary constituencies. The meeting drew 21 of Tamil Nadu’s 57 MPs, while the DMK and AIADMK stayed away.

The Times of India reported that the MPs who attended the meeting opposed the proposed delimitation bill. The Economic Times separately confirmed that MPs from the DMK and AIADMK boycotted the session, along with representatives from several other parties.

The attendance pattern exposed a political split over how Tamil Nadu’s parties should respond to the delimitation process. Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam and allied parties participated, while the two major Dravidian parties chose not to join the meeting. Their absence did not amount to support for the proposed changes, and the parties have raised their own concerns about Tamil Nadu’s representation.

Delimitation determines how parliamentary constituencies are redrawn and how representation is distributed. The current debate in Tamil Nadu centers on the state’s future parliamentary strength and the terms under which any new national exercise would be carried out. Those questions remain unresolved beyond the August 8 meeting.

The Times of India said the 21 MPs present unanimously rejected the proposed bill discussed at the meeting. The Economic Times reported that MPs from Congress, VCK, CPI(M), CPI, MDMK and IUML were among those who attended, while DMK, AIADMK, DMDK, MNM and PMK MPs did not take part.

The boycott also shows that opposition to a delimitation proposal does not automatically produce agreement on political strategy. Tamil Nadu’s parties remain divided over who should lead the state’s response and how negotiations with the central government should be handled.

As of August 8, the confirmed development is that Vijay’s meeting went ahead with 21 MPs, the attending members opposed the proposed delimitation bill, and both DMK and AIADMK stayed away. No final national delimitation settlement was announced at the meeting.
