Google Delays Gemini 3.5 Pro Launch to July 17 for Full Rebuild

By Saleh MohammadJuly 10, 20262 Mins Read

Google postponed the Gemini 3.5 Pro launch to July 17, scrapping the existing architecture for a complete rebuild. The delay, first reported earlier this month, reflects issues with token efficiency and coding performance that early testers flagged. The company aims to compete with OpenAI GPT-5.6 and Anthropic Claude models arriving around the same time.

The previous schedule called for a June launch, but three linked problems forced the rethink. Enterprise testers reported coding performance gaps, token-efficiency issues, and long-task reasoning that fell short of Google standards for a flagship tier model. Rather than ship compromised software, the company chose a complete architectural overhaul.

Competitive Pressure

Google faces intense pressure from Anthropic and OpenAI, both releasing advanced models in mid-July. OpenAI GPT-5.6 launched July 9 to public users. Anthropic Claude Opus 4.7 arrived recently. The Gemini delay means Google reaches market nearly simultaneously with rivals, eliminating any first-mover advantage but ensuring a credible product.

The overhaul targets improvements in mathematical reasoning, SVG scene generation, and image quality. These areas represent frontier-model differentiators that determine enterprise adoption and developer preference.

Official Stance

Google declined to officially confirm the revised schedule when asked. A company spokesperson offered no comment on the postponement, though internal sources indicate July 17 as the expected general availability date.

Gemini 3.5 Pro is expected to launch July 17, 2026.
