Kalshi, a prediction markets platform, closed a $1 billion Series F funding round in July 2026. The investment values the company at billions and accelerates expansion into new markets and product categories. Prediction markets allow users to bet on the outcome of events—elections, sports, economic indicators—creating real-time probability estimates.
Kalshi operates in a regulated gray area. US futures markets are overseen by the CFTC, which exempted limited-scope event contracts from traditional futures regulations in 2019. Kalshi uses this carve-out to operate prediction markets legally in the US, where most other platforms are blocked.
Business Model and Scale
Kalshi takes a 2–3% commission on each trade. Users deposit cash, trade contract positions, and withdraw profits. The platform generates revenue from spreads (bid-ask differences) and the fee on gross notional volume. As event volume and user count grow, Kalshi’s revenue scales exponentially.
Prediction markets attract three user segments: traders seeking ROI, hedgers protecting against specific risks, and information traders with genuine forecasting ability. Academic research shows prediction markets often forecast outcomes more accurately than polling or expert consensus, creating demand from media, corporations, and political operatives.
Regulatory Path Forward
Kalshi’s $1 billion Series F reflects investor confidence the regulatory environment will remain permissive. If Congress or the CFTC tighten rules, Kalshi’s business model faces existential risk. Conversely, if the US embraces prediction markets as legitimate price discovery mechanisms (like the UK and EU do), Kalshi’s addressable market explodes.
The company faces competition from FTX’s defunct prediction market (shut down in the 2022 collapse), traditional betting platforms expanding into prediction contracts, and offshore platforms that operate without US licenses.
Recent Performance
Kalshi saw explosive growth during the 2024 US election when 1M+ traders wagered on political outcomes. Election contracts alone generated billions in notional volume. The 2026 election cycle is underway, creating another major event window. Non-election contracts (sports, economic data, tech launches) provide year-round volume.
Kalshi’s $1 billion bet on prediction markets works only if regulators believe transparent, liquid event markets serve the public interest. That bet hasn’t been called yet.
