Netflix has set September 24, 2026, as the premiere date for its sequel series to “A Different World.” The date lands exactly 39 years after the original show debuted in 1987. The single-camera comedy will run 10 half-hour episodes.

The new series follows Deborah Wayne, the youngest daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert. She starts her freshman year at Hillman College, the fictional HBCU her parents attended. There, she works to build an identity of her own, outside their shadow.

Maleah Joi Moon stars as Deborah Wayne. Original cast members Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison are returning as Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne. That gives the sequel a direct link to the show that ran on NBC from 1987 to 1993.

Felicia Pride serves as showrunner and executive producer. The creative team includes original “A Different World” figures. Debbie Allen directed most of the first series and has helmed three episodes of the new season. She is joined by Reggie Rock Bythewood, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Tom Werner.

Netflix released a first look at the Hillman College sets and cast earlier this year. The rollout has also included premiere date announcements from Deadline and Variety, plus a Tudum feature detailing the show’s setting and characters.

The original “A Different World” is remembered for tackling campus life, race, and class at a fictional Black college. It helped launch the careers of several cast members over its six-season run. The sequel arrives as Netflix continues investing in reboots and legacy-IP series aimed at audiences who grew up with the originals.

Jasmine Guy has said publicly that she was eager to return to the role of Whitley. She told interviewers she wanted to see how the character had grown into a parent navigating her own daughter’s independence.

Casting and marketing for the new season are expected to ramp up through the summer. Additional trailers are likely in the weeks ahead of the September premiere. The premiere lands the same month as other new arrivals in Netflix’s August 2026 slate.
