Tesla FSD pothole avoidance has been confirmed again by Elon Musk, but owners still do not have a release date. Musk said the feature was “coming soon” on August 31 after a Tesla owner asked whether Full Self-Driving would reliably steer around potholes.
This time, the promise carries more weight than earlier comments. Tesla has already placed pothole avoidance inside its official FSD release notes. The feature first appeared under “Upcoming Improvements” with FSD v14.3 in April 2026.
Nearly five months later, however, pothole avoidance remains listed as an upcoming feature. It has not been broadly activated across Tesla’s consumer fleet, including builds through FSD v14.3.8.
Tesla has been discussing this problem for years. Musk agreed in 2019 that FSD should make small steering adjustments to protect tires from potholes. In 2020, he said Tesla was labeling bumps and potholes so vehicles could slow down or steer around them when safe.
The technical problem is harder than the simple description suggests. A vehicle, cyclist or piece of debris rises above the road. A pothole goes below it.
That difference matters for a camera-based driving system. A pothole may appear as a shadow, dark patch or surface change. The system must work out its depth, width and position before deciding whether moving around it is safer than staying in lane. Lighting, speed and unfamiliar road surfaces make that decision harder.
Tesla vehicles are already showing some pothole-related behavior. Owners have reported FSD versions occasionally slowing or shifting position near damaged sections of road.
One documented example involved FSD v14.2.2.5 positioning a vehicle so road damage passed between its tires. The available information does not establish whether the software identified the damage specifically as a pothole.
Consistency remains the problem. Occasional avoidance is different from a feature Tesla can confidently activate across millions of trips and different road conditions.
FSD v14 uses a neural network described in the source as having about one billion parameters. Tesla is developing FSD v15 around a model of roughly 10 billion parameters. Musk said in April that v15 would use the larger model. Early versions are already being used in Tesla’s Robotaxi program.
Tesla has not said pothole avoidance requires FSD v15. The company could still activate it through a later v14 update. That distinction matters because the feature has remained unfinished through several v14 releases.
FSD v14.3 also brought changes that could help. Tesla rewrote parts of its AI compiler and runtime using MLIR, with the source reporting a 20 percent improvement in reaction time. The update also improved the vision encoder’s ability to understand 3D geometry in difficult situations.
Tesla has already used fleet-generated road information for another purpose. Since a 2022 software update, supported Model S and Model X vehicles have been able to adjust suspension settings before reaching rough road sections using road data generated by Tesla vehicles.
Whether Tesla will combine that road information with live camera detection for active pothole avoidance remains unknown.
The timing is also becoming more important for Tesla’s driverless ambitions. Cybercab has no steering wheel or pedals. Tesla’s Robotaxi fleet is already using early FSD v15 builds, although Tesla has not announced whether those builds include active pothole avoidance.
Musk’s latest confirmation therefore settles one question but leaves the harder one open. Tesla intends to add pothole avoidance. What remains unknown is whether owners will receive it through another v14 release or have to wait for FSD v15.
