Xiaomi Vision Gran Tourismo is back in the spotlight after Xiaomi Auto released a new design documentary detailing how the concept car was created. The film was unveiled this week and coincides with the vehicle’s public display at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The documentary traces the collaboration between Xiaomi’s design teams in Beijing, Shanghai, and Munich. It focuses on how the electric concept was shaped around aerodynamic efficiency while remaining technically feasible under real-world physics.

A concept shaped by aerodynamics, not fantasy

The Xiaomi Vision Gran Tourismo was developed under the global Vision Gran Turismo initiative, a project launched by Gran Turismo producer Kazunori Yamauchi. The program invites major automotive brands to design dream cars without traditional production limits, though each design must remain theoretically functional.

According to Xiaomi, the core principle behind its concept was balancing aerodynamic drag and downforce. Designers describe the car as “sculpted by wind,” a reference to extensive airflow modeling and digital simulation work carried out across multiple studios.

Engineers involved in the project have stated that the vehicle does not break the laws of physics. The concept complies with aerodynamic principles and is considered engineeringly achievable, even if it is not destined for mass production.

Xiaomi confirmed that the Vision Gran Tourismo will not enter commercial manufacturing. Instead, it will be integrated into the Gran Turismo gaming platform, allowing players worldwide to experience the vehicle virtually.

The company also highlighted its broader automotive ambitions. In January 2026, Xiaomi’s SU7 Ultra became the first Chinese car to appear in Gran Turismo 7. The high-performance electric sedan was added to the game on January 29, marking a milestone for Chinese automakers in global racing simulations.

Technology brand steps into a historic automotive program

Xiaomi is the 36th brand to join the Vision Gran Turismo project. It is the first Chinese brand to receive an invitation and the first global technology company to participate in the initiative.

Previous participants have included established automotive manufacturers known for performance engineering. Xiaomi’s inclusion signals the growing convergence between consumer technology firms and the automotive sector.

The concept’s public showcase at MWC drew steady interest from industry observers. While MWC traditionally centers on mobile technology, Xiaomi used the global stage to underline its long-term electric vehicle strategy.

The documentary release appears timed to reinforce Xiaomi Auto’s positioning as both a hardware manufacturer and an emerging EV brand. The company has been expanding its electric vehicle operations steadily since entering the sector.
