Bangladesh Will Consider Mecca Pact If Invited, Minister Says

By Yousuf ParvezAugust 28, 20262 Mins Read

Bangladesh would consider joining the Mecca Pact if its founding members invite the country, Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman told Parliament on Aug. 27. His statement keeps the possibility open but does not confirm that Bangladesh has joined the arrangement.

Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported that Rahman was responding to a supplementary question about the possible benefits of membership. He said the country’s participation was not an issue at this stage because the decision would depend first on the intentions of the countries already involved. If those countries express an intention to invite Bangladesh, he said, Dhaka would consider the matter.

The pact was signed in Makkah on Aug. 7 by Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan. Rahman described it as a mechanism for the collective self-defence of Muslim countries and said an expansion should not be viewed as a cause for concern by other countries or communities. He also said it was premature to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of Bangladesh joining before an invitation was made.

Anadolu Agency reported the same parliamentary position, describing Bangladesh as willing to consider an invitation positively. The report also said opposition leader and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman separately described membership as a decision for Bangladesh itself. That comment adds a domestic political dimension to the discussion, but it does not amount to a government decision.

bdnews24.com reported that the agreement is a mutual-defence arrangement involving Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan. It cited an anonymous Bangladesh foreign-ministry source who said Saudi Arabia had invited Dhaka, while noting that the source did not say when the invitation was made. The report also said membership could affect Bangladesh’s foreign relations, particularly with neighbouring India.

The public statements therefore leave the status conditional. The foreign minister’s account identifies a possible invitation as the immediate requirement, while the press report describes an invitation claim from an unnamed official. Neither account establishes that Bangladesh has signed the pact or that accession has been finalized. For now, the confirmed development is that Dhaka is considering the question and would examine it if the existing members formally seek Bangladesh’s participation.
