The Yamaha R2 launch in India has created a new step in the company’s R-series line-up, placing a 204cc supersport motorcycle between the smaller R15 and the larger R3. India Yamaha Motor launched the bike on Aug. 27, making India the first global market to receive the new model.

India Today reported that the YZF-R2 starts at Rs 2,30,500 ex-showroom in Delhi. The motorcycle is offered in three variants. The base version costs Rs 2,30,500 and is available in Metallic Black and Dark Bluish Gray. The quick-shifter variant costs Rs 2,39,500 and comes in Matte White Pearl and Racing Blue. The top R2 M costs Rs 2,53,000 and is offered in Metallic Gray.

Deliveries are scheduled to begin from mid-September 2026 through Yamaha’s Blue Square dealerships. The launch therefore gives buyers a confirmed price and availability window rather than only an expected product plan. Earlier reports had described the R2 as a possible step-up for R15 owners, but the Aug. 27 announcement supplied the company’s final variant structure and pricing.

The motorcycle uses a newly developed 204cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder, four-valve engine with double overhead camshafts and fuel injection. India Today reported output of 26.5bhp and peak torque of 19.1Nm. The bike has a 149kg kerb weight, a six-speed gearbox, dual-channel ABS, traction control and an assist-and-slipper clutch.

Feature differences separate the variants. India Today said the second and top versions receive a third-generation bi-directional quick shifter, while the R2 M adds adjustable suspension, a Smart Key System and premium trim details. Yamaha Ride Control provides Street, Sport and Rain modes, and the motorcycle uses a 5-inch colour TFT display with ride and navigation information.

BikeWale also reported the three-variant, five-colour range and said deliveries would start in September. Its launch report placed the R2 between the R15 and R3 in the Indian market, while the price and equipment give Yamaha a direct presence in the 200cc supersport class. The new launch angle is the role of the R2 inside the range: it is not simply another R-series name, but Yamaha’s first 200cc offering and a defined middle step for Indian buyers.
