Comcast has added WiFi Motion to Xfinity Shield, giving compatible Xfinity gateways a way to detect movement inside a home. The opt-in feature uses changes in Wi-Fi signals between the gateway and selected connected devices, then sends activity notifications through the Xfinity app.

Comcast announced Xfinity Shield on August 18, 2026. TechCrunch reported the rollout the same day and described WiFi Motion as a feature for newer Xfinity gateways. The company says WiFi Motion is included with Xfinity Internet for customers using compatible equipment, so it does not require a separate motion sensor.
The system works by measuring disruptions in the radio-frequency signals moving between the gateway and other stationary Wi-Fi devices. Xfinity says those devices can include a smart speaker or thermostat. The gateway can also work with Xfinity Wi-Fi extenders, while the setup allows up to three additional stationary connected devices.
Users turn on WiFi Motion from the Xfinity app. The feature is off by default, and the app guides customers through coverage setup. Xfinity provides Home Watch, Away Watch and Dark Watch modes for different monitoring situations. The company also lets users adjust motion sensitivity and exclude small-pet movement from notifications.
Equipment compatibility is limited. Xfinity lists the Technicolor TXB7, XB8, XB9, XB10, MXB1 and XER10 gateways for WiFi Motion. A customer with another gateway cannot assume the feature will appear or work. The service also requires Xfinity Internet and suitable Wi-Fi devices that stay powered and connected.
Device placement affects the sensing area. Xfinity says the feature detects movement along the signal path between the gateway and selected devices. Home size, walls, building materials and the position of the equipment can change how well the system detects activity, so the company tells users to test their setup periodically.
WiFi Motion is different from a camera-based security system. Comcast says the feature does not use cameras, capture photos or video, record audio, identify individuals or determine the exact location of movement. It is designed to signal that motion occurred between connected devices, not to show what happened or who caused it.
The service does create a short activity history. Xfinity says enabled accounts can retain motion activity, including when movement starts and ends, for up to seven days so customers can review events in the app. Comcast also says it does not monitor the motion alerts generated by the service.
The feature gives existing Xfinity customers another use for equipment already in the home, but its limits remain part of the product description. WiFi Motion depends on compatible hardware, careful placement and an internet-connected app. Comcast presents it as added awareness for a connected home, rather than a replacement for cameras or dedicated security equipment.
