Tesla launched the Model Y Long Wheelbase (Model Y L) in the US and Puerto Rico on July 2. The six-seat variant adds nearly six inches to the wheelbase and over seven inches to overall length. The Launch Edition Premium AWD starts at $61,990.
This addresses a real frustration. The standard Model Y’s third row is cramped. Tall passengers complain. Kids get uncomfortable. Parents get frustrated. Tesla tried to solve this with higher prices on longer models. With the Model Y L, the solution is a longer car at a reasonable price point.
Specs and Performance
The Model Y L delivers 325 miles of range and accelerates from 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds. That’s quick enough to feel responsive but not the fastest Tesla makes. Performance matters, but most buyers care more about range and interior space.
The extended wheelbase opens up the third row. Six inches doesn’t sound like much until you’re sitting in the back seat. The difference between “barely fits” and “comfortable” is often just five or six inches. That small change makes the car useful for families with teenagers or adults who need a third row occasionally.
Power consumption improved alongside the longer platform. The extra length and weight require more energy, but Tesla’s efficiency improvements offset much of that. 325 miles is respectable for a three-row, six-seat SUV.
Why Now
The Model Y L already succeeded in China, where it launched last summer, and in Australia and New Zealand this year. Tesla doesn’t bring vehicles to new markets without proof of concept. Sales in those regions showed demand. Now the US gets access.
Tesla’s US lineup has been stable for years. New models are rare. This is an expansion of an existing model, not a completely new product. That strategy lowers risk and lets Tesla test market response before bigger bets.
The price is key. At $61,990, the Model Y L undercuts larger three-row EVs from other manufacturers. Volkswagen’s ID.Buzz, for comparison, starts higher and delivers less range. Toyota’s three-row hybrids and EVs cost more. Tesla’s pricing advantage is significant.
What’s Included
The Launch Edition Premium AWD bundle includes one year of Full Self-Driving (Supervised), one year of Supercharging, and one year of Premium Connectivity. That’s approximately $2,500 in services included in the initial purchase price. After that, costs revert to standard.
Full Self-Driving is still evolving. One year gives owners time to try the feature and decide whether to subscribe long-term. It’s Tesla’s way of introducing capability without requiring permanent commitment.
Available Now
The Model Y L is available to order immediately. Deliveries began July 2. Inventory will be limited initially. Pricing will likely rise once launch allocation sells out, following Tesla’s pattern for new variants.
The Model Y L proves that the simple solution—make the car longer—solves real problems. Six extra inches of wheelbase, solved. That’s all that was needed.
