iPhone Duo adds a hidden display setting for protective cases

By Abul KalamSeptember 15, 20262 Mins Read

Apple’s foldable iPhone Duo includes a small display setting designed for case compatibility. MacRumors reported the “Shift Left Edge” option after a hands-on discovery, while Apple’s launch material confirms the phone’s foldable two-screen design and its gesture-focused iOS experience.

The setting adds a narrow black border along the left side of the outer display. Turning it on roughly doubles the width of that border. The change reduces the active screen area slightly, but it can leave more room for a protective case that reaches close to the edge.

The left edge matters because iPhone users often swipe from that side to go back. A thick or tightly fitting case can make the gesture harder to start. The Shift Left Edge option appears to be a way to preserve that interaction when the case covers part of the display area.

Apple has introduced two official cases for the Duo, including an iPhone Duo Case and a Folio with Kickstand. MacRumors notes that it is not clear whether either official case covers the edge enough to require the setting. The feature may be more useful for bulky third-party cases.

The option does not change the physical screen or move the hinge. It is a software adjustment that places a wider unused margin on one side. Users who do not have a gesture problem have little reason to enable it, because the normal display area remains preferable for reading, video and other content.

The iPhone Duo opens to a 7.6-inch inner display and uses a 5.4-inch outer display, according to Apple. That makes edge interaction important on the smaller outside screen, where a case can have a bigger effect on the available touch area.

Apple has not described the Shift Left Edge control as a major headline feature. It is a practical detail for a new foldable design. If early owners find that a case interferes with the back swipe, the setting offers a reversible fix. Everyone else can leave it off and use the full outer display.
