President Donald Trump turned 80 on Sunday and marked the occasion in characteristically outsized fashion, hosting UFC Freedom 250 on the South Lawn of the White House in what the administration called a celebration of America’s 250th anniversary and the president’s birthday combined.

A 92-foot temporary octagon was erected on the South Lawn for the event, which featured seven mixed martial arts bouts and was live-streamed on Paramount+. The National Park Service said approximately 4,000 guests watched from the South Lawn itself, including 1,000 active-duty service members. Another 120,000 people who won free tickets in a public lottery gathered at the Ellipse to watch on large screens.
The main event paired lightweight fighters Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje. The undercard included bouts between Alex Pereira and Ciryl Gane, Sean O’Malley and Aiemann Zahabi, and Michael Chandler against Mauricio Ruffy. Dana White, UFC president and longtime Trump friend, introduced the fights from ringside. White said he was honored to bring the sport to the most famous lawn in the world.
Trump appeared at the event flanked by family members and senior administration officials. He greeted fighters and posed for photographs with military veterans in attendance. His sons Donald Jr. and Eric were ringside throughout the evening. The White House billed the event as a thank-you to the armed forces and a tribute to American strength.
The choice of a UFC event for a presidential birthday drew criticism from some political opponents who called it inappropriate for the grounds. Supporters said it was a reflection of the president’s style and his connection to the sport’s fanbase. Trump and Dana White have maintained a close relationship since White held his first fight card at the Trump Taj Mahal in 2001.
The event took place against the backdrop of nationwide No Kings protests organized by opponents of the administration. The White House did not publicly comment on the demonstrations. Trump’s communications team focused messaging on the UFC event as a contrast to what it called partisan political theater. The administration’s handling of the Iran war was a topic of both the celebrations and the protests.
Separate from the UFC event, the administration hosted smaller formal ceremonies at the White House earlier in the day, including a birthday reception with Republican members of Congress. Trump received calls from several world leaders, including French President Macron ahead of the G7 summit. The birthday also coincided with the expected signing of the Iran ceasefire deal in Europe, which the administration called the best birthday present of all.
UFC Freedom 250 was the latest in a series of UFC events that have been held at unusual venues since the organization moved away from traditional pay-per-view. The White House fight card drew the largest audience numbers for any UFC event streamed on Paramount+ this year. Trump is a regular attendee at UFC events and has been given a front-row seat at major bouts throughout his presidency. Flag Day celebrations tied to the administration’s agenda rounded out the day’s events.
